Walking home to raise money for Norfolk church

Last week Rev Kyla Sørensen, Team Rector of St. Faith’s Church Gaywood, embarked on a reverse pilgrimage across West Norfolk to raise much-needed funds for the mission and ministry at St. Faith’s.

Rev Kyla and her husband Peter walked a ‘reverse pilgrimage’ from Walsingham back home to Gaywood, King’s Lynn. The sponsored walk, designed to raise funds to support the work of St. Faith’s in the local community, saw them exceed their goal.

“We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of prayer and care from church family and beyond. We exceeded the online target of £500 and with additional monetary donations via forms in the church and office our final amount is £1160 – so much more than we had hoped,” said Rev Kyla.

The 33km walk marked the first anniversary of Kyla and Peter moving to King’s Lynn.

“So much has happened in our first 12 months: From celebrating births and remembering loved ones, the opening of the St. Faith’s Community Hub, starting new prayer groups to reintroducing more social events and beginning to build the church’s outreach into the Gaywood Community. It’s been an inspiring time. We have much to be thankful for, but there is still much to do,” said Rev Kyla.

During their time on pilgrimage to the Holy Land before Easter, Kyla and Peter reflected on what it means to be on a road where the only purpose is to come home to Jesus. There is a certain love and peace that purpose brings, and they were moved how all else flows from that deep sense of oneness with the one who loves us.

Since that time on pilgrimage, they have been pondering what it means to be walking alongside others – in church and in community, and this sponsored walk seemed the ideal way to raise much needed funds for the church.

Rev Kyla said: “As we approached our final couple of miles, we were tired and our bodies were sore – but we heard the bells at St. Faith’s ringing out – I don’t mind saying it brought a tear to my eye – it’s as if we were being called home. It gave us the spring in our step we needed for the last leg!”
