Major fire devastates historic West Norfolk church
The Diocese of Ely has praised the Norfolk Fire Service for their hard work tackling a major blaze at St Mary’s Church in Wimbotsham this morning (Wednesday, September 4) which has left the church with a collapsed roof, a badly damaged interior and a saddened community.
Early this morning the Norfolk Fire Service were called to St Mary’s Church in Wimbotsham, near Downham Market, in response to a major fire.
Fire crews from King’s Lynn, Downham market, Methwold, Sandringham, Fakenham, Terrington and Outwell attended the fire. Speaking to the EDP, Station Manager of King’s Lynn Fire Service Terry Pinto said: “It was a well developed fire. Unfortunately the majority of the church has 100pc been damaged by the fire. We’ve been able to save some of the historical items from the church.”
St Mary’s Church in Wimbotsham had open access 24 hours a day. It was built around 1175 and is part of the Diocese of Ely.
A tweet published by the Diocese of Ely said: “Such sad news to see such devastating damage to St Mary’s Church in Wimbotsham. Thank goodness no one was harmed and our thanks for the superb efforts of the Norfolk Fire Service. Our prayers and thoughts are with those in the community at this sad time.”
