A Lampedusa Cross which has been hand carved from the wood of capsized boats carrying refugees has gone on display at King’s Lynn Minster to highlight the refugee crisis.
A Lampedusa Cross will be installed at King’s Lynn Minster from Wednesday, March 1 – Wednesday, March 8.
The cross has been made by a carpenter from the Italian Island of Lampedusa, from the wood of shipwrecked boats that were carrying refugees from Eritrea and Somalia.
Pope Francis commissioned and carried his own Lampedusa Cross at a memorial service in 2013 for the 300 refugees who drowned after one boat carrying 500 refugees capsized in October of that year.
Canon Christopher Ivory from King’s Lynn Minster said: “We are having the cross with a display about the refugee crisis in the week leading up the Churches Together in King’s Lynn talk on refugees by the CEO of The Refugee Council, Maurice Wren, on Wednesday, March 8 at 7pm at London Road Methodist Church.
“There will also be a special Holy Communion service with the cross on Tuesday, March 7 at 12.30pm in the Benedict Chapel of the Minster where we will pray for refugees.”
