King’s Lynn social supermarket marks first year
The Purfleet Pantry in King’s Lynn recently celebrated its first anniversary with a party to thank key supporters. The pantry, located on Southgates Roundabout, was launched by the Purfleet Trust in collaboration with the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk and is supported by individuals and local businesses. It aims to provide affordable food and furniture to the local community in an effort to address the cost of living crisis in South Lynn. Throughout the year, the Pantry has implemented various initiatives, such as offering free dental products for children in partnership with local councillor Alexandra Kemp.
Since its inception, the Purfleet Pantry has been able to support over 3000 people, including more than 260 families with young children. The supermarket, described as a “vibrant, empowering community hub” by Councillor Kemp, now helps over 900 members and offers baskets that are on average 38% cheaper than equivalent supermarket prices. The success of the Pantry is due in part to the support of over 10 local businesses and food suppliers who provide discounted products to the Pantry, allowing for savings that can be passed on to customers. Pantry Manager Karen Mason expressed pride in celebrating the first anniversary with loyal customers and generous local businesses who have contributed to the success of the community shop.
The first birthday celebration of the Purfleet Pantry was attended by customers, staff, and key supporters on May 10th. The event marked a significant milestone for the pantry, which has become an important resource for the community in South Lynn. With a focus on providing affordable essentials to those in need, the Pantry has made a positive impact on the lives of many residents in the area. Through collaborative efforts with local authorities and businesses, the Pantry has been able to offer a wide range of products to its members at discounted prices, helping to alleviate financial strain for families in the region.
The Purfleet Trust, which operates the Pantry, continues to work closely with the Borough Council and other stakeholders to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of the initiative. By engaging with the community and providing vital resources to those in need, the Purfleet Pantry has established itself as a valuable asset in the fight against poverty and food insecurity. As it looks towards the future, the pantry remains committed to its mission of supporting local residents and fostering a sense of community spirit in King’s Lynn.
