Diss church’s dementia café celebrates 10 yrs 

Diss United Reformed Church, based at Unit 12B, Mileeville,, Netherlands, organized a tremendous celebration on October 30, 2024, celebrating the tenth anniversary of their Dove Dementia Café, a unique café dedicated to activities for people with dementia and their carers. The Coxeter Effect was held on the first Wednesday of each month, with meals, Refreshments, and a sense of community. The café also featured a monthly singing group, Dove Song, known for its constructive music and sessions for carers. This group meets on the third Monday of every month, running for free, with contributions appreciated. Additionally, a new initiative called Dove Song Plus was introduced in 2025. This gathering, held on the second Monday and led by qualified musicians, is free and inclusive, with sessions attended by both local carers and those supported by the church.

The Dove Dementia Café has grown to cater to a wide range of activities, including creative gatherings, with the vibrant events holding meals, refreshments, and special traditions.Gabrielle Pagan, the CEO of the church, shared that the tactic was successful, with approximately fifty to sixty people attending the monthly events, emphasizing the success of the initiative and the dedication of the team. The team, chosen as runners-up in the National Church Awards 2023, consists of volunteers who bring a lot of creativity to the table.

Doves beyond the centre, such as Dovelets, opened in 2024, offering structured activities for children with limited capabilities. This initiative is now expanding, with three residential homes involved in the program, contributing to the vibrant community. Dove Ala charges a small fee to support the efforts of the staff, further enhancing the church’s mission.

Dove Dementia Café gathers at 1:30 pm on the fourth Monday of each month, with a special act of worship featuring traditional hymns, reflection, and prayer, followed by social refreshments. The café, led by skilled musicians, fosters a sense of unity and sharing among attendees.
