Youth and Age awaking souls together in Cromer

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society will be performing in a joint concert called Awake my Soul with Broadland Youth Choir at Cromer Parish Church later this month.

The combined choir will sing John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, a piece written especially to be performed by a joint adult and children’s choir. The youth choir will also sing some pieces on their own.

The adult choir will also be singing Elgar’s Te Deum plus the first performance of a piece called Seasons which has been especially commissioned from Thomas Hewitt Jones who has recently composed the official Royal School of Church Music anthem to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This piece is dedicated to the Choral Society and to the memory of Barbara Proctor. Barbara, a long-standing member of the choir, gifted funds in her will to the Society. The concert is given in her memory.

John Rutter’s Mass of the Children was first performed on 13 February 2003 in Carnegie Hall, New York, conducted by the composer. As well as including traditional Latin texts the Mass also includes verses by Thomas Ken (1637- 1711), William Blake (1757 – 1827) and others. Seasons by Thomas Hewitt Jones is a cycle of movements about the seasons of the year using the words of four poets: D H Lawrence, William Shakespeare, Emily Brontë and Paul Williamson.

The performance will be conducted by musical director David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo (soprano), pictured above with the choir, and Isaac Cooper (baritone).  Zaira is also the musical director of Broadland Youth Choir, pictured right, which was formed 30 years ago and provides young singers with the opportunity to come together to make music.
