Norwich City: Tony Springett on Wes Hoolahan and Shane Duffy

Norwich City winger Springett recently made his third appearance for his national team, the Republic of Ireland under-21s, and played a crucial role in their 2-1 victory against Latvia. Springett has joined a prestigious list of Irish internationals who have played for Norwich City, including Shane Duffy and Adam Idah, who are currently part of Stephen Kenny’s senior squad. Another former Norwich City player and Springett’s former teammate, Andrew Omobamidele, is also part of the under-21 squad for their qualifiers against Greece and Gibraltar. Springett credits these players for their impact on his development, as well as two former Irish Canaries, Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady.

Although Springett was born and raised in South-East London, he takes immense pride in his Irish roots, which have been instilled in him by his family. Despite facing questions about whether he would choose to represent England instead, Springett’s mother has always reminded him of his Irish heritage, and his parents have always supported his passion for Irish football. Springett recalls his mother’s emotional reaction when he was first called up to play for Ireland, as she was overwhelmed with pride. He also mentions that he is not in contact with much of his English family.

Springett’s strong connection to his Irish heritage drives him to perform at his best and represent his family on the international stage. He sees himself as playing for his mum and dad, as well as for his entire family. The support he receives from his family amplifies his motivation and makes him grateful to have their backing. Springett’s story emphasizes the importance of family, heritage, and identity in shaping a player’s journey, as well as the impact that fellow players and former legends have in their development.
