Sheringham Methodists’ Climate Change Day

A Climate Change and Sustainability Fair was recently held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Sheringham, with the aim of encouraging people to live more simply and sustainably to help save the planet. The event, organised by representatives from the town’s churches, Sheringham Town Council, and interested members of the public, was opened by the Mayor of Sheringham, Cllr Peter Ratcliffe. Various stalls and exhibits were set up by groups such as CAFOD, Sheringham Community Fridge, and Fairtrade, with presentations and discussions led by Alison Webster on various topics related to climate change. Visitors were also able to participate in quizzes and demonstrations on recycling clothing and greetings cards.

Pupils from Sheringham Community Primary School showcased their talents at the fair, presenting sculptures, paintings, and poems, with the school choir providing entertainment through singing. Attendees were impressed by the knowledge and passion displayed by the young people, with one adult remarking on learning a lot from their conversations. Refreshments, including cakes and soup, were available throughout the day, creating a welcoming and communal atmosphere. Representatives from various organizations, such as Jane Crone from CAFOD, were pleased with the sense of community and purpose that was evident at the event.

The success of the Climate Change and Sustainability Fair has inspired hopes that attendees will continue to support similar events in the future, such as the Sustainable Saturday event held at the Friends Meeting House in Sheringham. This monthly event, starting with coffee at 10.30am and featuring a talk and discussion at 11am, followed by homemade soup, aims to further educate and engage the community in sustainable practices and environmental awareness. Feedback from participants and organizers was positive, with the Deputy Mayor of Sheringham Town Council, Cllr Sue Brisbane, acknowledging the positive energy and buzz surrounding the fair.
