St Andrews Methodist Church in Sheringham will be hosting a coffee morning next month in aid of Fairtrade Exchange. Tony Rothe reports.
The event, from 10.45am to 12 noon on Friday March 4 has been arranged as part of Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from February 21 to March 6 nationally.
Jean Parton, a member of the ‘Fairtrade for Sheringham’ group, explains: “Sheringham is a Fairtrade Town of which we are all very proud, thanks to the hard work of Brenda Smith and others over many years. To ensure we stay a Fairtrade Town, we need to demonstrate that Sheringham is still committed to flying the flag for fair trade not just locally but across the world.”
Jean says that several new business outlets have recently opened in Sheringham, and if any are able to use or sell Fairtrade products, she would love to hear about them.
Profits from the sale of Fairtrade goods are distributed worldwide. Jean quotes the example of Joshna, a small time farmer from Bangladesh, who has been able to build a road from her community to market saving a five-hour walk around marshland. The journey now takes just ten minutes! All because she received financial assistance from the charity Fairtrade Exchange.
The coffee morning will be held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church on Cromer Road in Sheringham. Fairtrade goods will be for sale, and it is hoped there will be some Fairtrade cakes and biscuits to taste. The coffee, tea and sugar used will certainly all be Fairtrade. Everyone is invited to come along and learn more about Fairtrade, as well as perhaps meeting new people.
