Great Ryburgh church cutting the grass again
St. Andrew’s at Great Ryburgh has recently received funding for a new lawnmower to help maintain the green space surrounding their community building. The Friday Morning Gardening Team, which has been caring for the churchyard for over a decade, was awarded £6,000 in National Lottery funding to support their work. The team plants, weeds, mows, and waters the garden, creating a welcoming space for local people and visitors to enjoy. With the addition of a new flint and brick community building and surrounding field, the team has expanded their work to include larger scale mowing and hedging to create a venue for outdoor events.
The new lawnmower was needed after the old ride-on mower broke down beyond repair. The National Lottery Community Fund provided the funding for the replacement, allowing the volunteer mower to work with a more efficient machine. The team is grateful for the support from Ben Burgess of Beeston for their advice in choosing a suitable mower. Anne Prentis, Churchwarden at St. Andrew’s, emphasizes the importance of their green surroundings in offering hospitality and enhancing the well-being of those who visit. New volunteers are encouraged to come forward, with no experience necessary.
The St. Andrew’s calendar includes upcoming events such as a barbecue on 3 August and an Arts Festival over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, providing plenty of opportunities for the community to visit. The National Lottery Community Fund has four key missions, including supporting communities to come together, being environmentally sustainable, helping children and young people thrive, and enabling people to live healthier lives. This story was featured in the Diocese of Norwich newsletter, highlighting the importance of community support and environmental sustainability in maintaining and enhancing local green spaces.
