Norfolk churches back Ukraine aid mission
In response to the war in Ukraine, Swaffham road haulier Scott Stone and partner Zoe Waites have been leading humanitarian aid efforts to support those affected by the conflict. The couple initially became involved when they volunteered to transport donations to the Ukrainian Embassy in London, and their involvement quickly expanded as they were contacted by Dorota Darnell, co-founder of the Polonia Group in Norwich, who requested that the items be taken to Poland. The first trip taken by Scott was on March 1, and the image of mothers and babies on television inspired the community to donate items such as clothing, blankets, and nappies. As the conflict continued, Scott began making direct trips to Kiev, taking medical aid, electrical items, food, and medicine. He has since expanded his efforts to deliver aid directly to the front lines in Odessa, Kherson, and other areas in the Donbas region, where he unloads his containers and transfers items to small vans for delivery.
In their efforts to support the humanitarian aid mission, Scott and Zoë have received support from various organizations and churches in Norfolk. Many Rotary Clubs in the area have raised money to help fund their efforts, and organizations such as the Salvation Army and churches in Swaffham and Norwich have provided items and support. Zoë plays a crucial role in collecting and organizing the donations, as well as managing the essential paperwork required for Scott to enter Ukraine and transport aid across the country. While their efforts have received some funding and support from the community, there is still a financial shortfall, and the couple continues to rely on donations to sustain their mission.
