A trail of ‘eco-angels’ featuring figures such as Greta Thunberg, the King, and a womble made from recycled materials, has been created by local schoolchildren and displayed in ten churches in North and mid-Norfolk. The trail highlights real and fictional environmental champions who have made the world a better place and will be on display until September 30, with a pilgrim trail linking all the churches. The Bishop of Norwich, Rt Rev Graham Usher, launched the trail, emphasizing the importance of caring for the planet and hoping that the message of the eco-angels will inspire change.
The eco-angels were crafted by children from local schools using recycled or repurposed materials as a tribute to individuals and characters who have contributed positively to the environment. The models include well-known figures such as Greta Thunberg, Chris Packham, and King Charles III, as well as fictional characters like WALL-E. Each eco-angel represents a different aspect of environmentalism and sustainability, showcasing the diverse ways in which people can make a difference in preserving the planet for future generations. The trail was coordinated by churches in the Ingworth and Sparham Deanery in collaboration with Scrapbox, a re-use charity that repurposes waste products.
Visitors can follow the trail to view the eco-angels at various churches, including St Peter’s, Easton, where a model of Lisa Simpson made from plastic bottles and cardboard can be found, and St Mary’s, Itteringham, which features a model of fungi expert Dr. Tony Leech created from recycled plastic, paper, and wood. The eco-angels serve as a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging people to take action in protecting the natural world. The trail provides an opportunity to explore Norfolk’s churches and learn about the efforts being made to promote eco-friendly practices in the community.
