Yarmouth choir gets them dancing on the pews

The Happy Day Gospel Choir, based in Great Yarmouth, was originally formed for one concert in 2011 but has continued for 12 years, bringing joy to audiences and its members. Lolo Wynans and Andy Hudson were asked by a friend to form the choir, and with the help of church friends and acquaintances, the Joyous Praise Rockin’ Gospel Choir was born. Despite having no prior experience in leading a choir, Lolo and Andy learned to coordinate, arrange, and compose music, leading to the success of the initial concert and the decision to continue the choir. With a focus on the ethos of enthusiastic, joyful praise, the choir has a fun and friendly atmosphere at rehearsals, creating a sense of family among its 18 members.

The Happy Day Gospel Choir consists of members from various Christian churches and denominations, as well as non-believers, united by their love of music and the joy it brings. The choir has performed numerous concerts, mainly in churches around Norfolk, raising around £10,000 for various charities. Audience participation is encouraged, contributing to the shared sense of joy during the concerts. The choir’s wide repertoire includes gospel classics, traditional songs, and its own versions of songs, showcasing its musical diversity. The choir’s most recent performance was at the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival, and it welcomes new members and invitations to sing.

The success of the Happy Day Gospel Choir is attributed to its focus on joyful praise and the sense of family among its members. The choir’s enthusiastic and friendly atmosphere during rehearsals and concerts has had a positive impact on its members, with one member finding solace in the choir after a personal loss. The choir’s performances have led to memorable moments, such as the vicar dancing on a pew during a concert. The choir’s commitment to bringing joy through music, as well as its openness to new members and performance opportunities, has contributed to its longevity and success over the past 12 years.
