The future of a church in Great Yarmouth town centre is threatened as a year-long parking dispute with Norfolk County Council continues.
Traditionally, the many visitors to Christchurch on King Street could park on the building’s forecourt with a permit. However, in May 2021, signs were put up on the land by Norfolk County Council stating that parking was banned on the verge or footway.
Despite the council saying it had plans to reverse the parking ban at the site, the church say they have heard nothing about the reversal of the ban. Visitor numbers are dwindling and the number of people attending the Sunday services has halved over the past year. The church fears that if they do not get permission to park soon, they could be forced to close as visitors will go elsewhere.
A Norfolk County Council spokesperson said the delay to the change of traffic order around the church is part of a larger project to improve the existing parking in Great Yarmouth
Christchurch in Great Yarmouth is home to the Great Yarmouth Civic Society, Alcoholics Anonymous, East Norfolk Transport Users Association, University of the Third Age, and at least 14 other groups.
