New Minister for Norfolk Broads Methodists

New Beginnings: The Norfolk Broads Methodist Circuit Welcomes Rev Steve Oliver

The Norfolk Broads Methodist Circuit is preparing to welcome Reverend Steve Oliver and his wife Jill into their community with open arms. The couple will be formally received at a special welcome service at Magdalen Way Methodist Church in Gorleston on Sunday, October 26th at 3 pm. This gathering represents not just a ceremonial transition but the beginning of a meaningful relationship between the minister and the Methodist communities he will serve in Acle, Freethorpe, Lingwood, and Magdalen Way in Gorleston. The circuit extends a warm invitation to all community members, regardless of their religious affiliation, to join in welcoming the Olivers to Norfolk.

Rev Steve’s journey to the Norfolk Broads Circuit reflects a life of dedicated service and personal resilience. His ministerial path began in the rolling hills of West Wales as a probationer, followed by service in the Thetford, Diss, and Mildenhall area, where he took on the significant responsibility of Superintendent. His calling then led him to West Norfolk Circuit as a section Minister before he retired to Suffolk in 2020. However, Steve’s retirement coincided with a profound personal challenge when he was diagnosed with leukemia. His five-year remission stands as a testament to his strength and determination. Rather than fully retiring after this health battle, Steve chose to continue his ministry, spending the past year serving the Ipswich circuit before now accepting this new role in Norfolk.

Behind every minister is often a supportive family, and Steve’s is no exception. His wife Jill is actively pursuing her own spiritual development as a local preacher in training, indicating the couple’s shared commitment to faith and service. Their family life is rich and extensive, with four children and seven grandchildren creating a tapestry of relationships that span continents – three of their grandchildren live in America. The Oliver household is further enlivened by their furry companions: one cat and two dogs that accompany Steve on his walks. These walks are more than mere exercise; they represent moments of reflection and connection with nature that feed into his ministry. Beyond his clerical duties, Steve embraces a diverse range of interests that reveal his multifaceted personality. He finds joy in the intense rhythms of heavy metal music, the excitement of football matches, and the historical storytelling inherent in antiques. His collection of walking sticks speaks to an appreciation for craftsmanship and heritage, while his appearance on the television program “Bargain Hunt” with a colleague from Diss shows his willingness to step outside traditional ministerial activities and engage with broader cultural experiences – even if, as he humorously notes, their antique-selling ventures didn’t yield significant profits.

At the heart of Rev Steve’s approach to ministry is a profound focus on people and their faith journeys. He embraces the privilege of introducing individuals to Christ and equally values walking alongside those continuing their spiritual growth. His ministry is grounded in traditional practices that have sustained Christian communities for generations – the sacred act of presiding over Holy Communion, the thoughtful exposition of scripture through preaching, the collective exploration of biblical texts in study groups, and the compassionate provision of pastoral care. These elements come together in his vision for ministry that is deeply relational and community-oriented. The communities of Acle, Freethorpe, Lingwood, and Magdalen Way can anticipate a minister who values connection, understanding, and authentic spiritual development.

As he prepares to begin this new chapter, Rev Steve’s closing thoughts reveal his collaborative spirit and Christ-centered approach. His invitation to the community to pray together for “guidance and reassurance in the decisions we will make together” reflects his understanding that ministry is not a solitary endeavor but a shared journey. His hope that their collective actions will “always reflect love for each other and of our Lord Jesus Christ” establishes the foundation upon which he intends to build his ministry in the Norfolk Broads Circuit. This emphasis on mutual love and divine reflection creates a promising framework for the relationships he will develop with his new congregations and the wider community.

The Norfolk Broads Methodist Circuit stands at the threshold of a new era with the arrival of Rev Steve and Jill Oliver. Their journey to this point – marked by faithful service, personal challenges, and continued commitment to ministry – brings a wealth of experience and perspective that will undoubtedly enrich the spiritual life of the communities they serve. As the welcome service approaches, there is a sense of anticipation and hope for the meaningful connections and spiritual growth that will emerge from this new beginning. The circuit’s openness in inviting all to attend the welcome service reflects the inclusive spirit that characterizes their community and suggests that Rev Steve’s ministry will reach beyond traditional boundaries to touch the lives of many in East Norfolk.
