Medieval English attraction once used as a prison is finally reopening after 5 years with £27.5million revamp

The historic Norwich Castle, a beloved tourist destination, is finally set to reopen its doors to the public after a major renovation project that has spanned five years. The £27.5 million project, titled “Royal Palace Reborn,” has been a labor of love, with a team of dedicated experts working tirelessly to restore the 900-year-old building to its former glory. The renovation work, which began in the summer of 2020, was initially expected to be completed by the end of 2023, but unfortunately, it was plagued by delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, difficulties sourcing materials, and the discovery of hidden Norman and Victorian features. Despite these setbacks, the team persevered, and their hard work has paid off. The castle is now ready to welcome visitors once again, with a grand reopening scheduled for August 7, 2025.

The renovation project has been a massive undertaking, with a focus on restoring the original floor levels in the Grade I listed keep, which was completed in 1121 by King Henry I. The team has also recreated the great hall and the apartments of Norman kings, giving visitors a glimpse into what life was like in medieval England. One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the creation of a new gallery showcasing Medieval life, which has been developed in partnership with the British Museum. This gallery will feature over 1,000 artifacts, providing a unique and immersive experience for visitors. The castle’s revamped visitor facilities, including a glass atrium, a new shop, a cafe, and learning space, will also be available for visitors to enjoy. With the addition of step-free access from the basement to the rooftop battlements, the castle is now more accessible than ever, making it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages and abilities.

The Royal Palace Reborn project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of National Lottery players, who have contributed £13 million to the project through the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Norfolk County Council has also provided significant funding, including £4.7 million in additional funds last year. The council’s investment in the project is a testament to their commitment to preserving the region’s rich history and cultural heritage. The project’s success is also a result of the dedication and hard work of the Norfolk Museums Service team, who have worked tirelessly to bring the castle back to life. As the castle prepares to reopen, the team is excited to share their work with the public and provide a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.

For those planning to visit the castle, general booking for tickets is now open, with priority booking available for those with a Norfolk Museums Pass. Visitors can look forward to exploring the castle’s newly restored keep, the great hall, and the Norman kings’ apartments, as well as the new Medieval life gallery.
