Norwich City: David Wagner on Josh Sargent surgery

The US international striker damaged ankle ligaments in scoring his third Championship goal in five appearances in the 4-0 rout at Huddersfield.

Sargent injured his ankle blocking an initial clearance from Terriers’ keeper Lee Nicholls before pouncing on the rebound and collapsing to the turf.

But head coach David Wagner provided a positive post-op update at Colney as he previewed Stoke’s weekend visit to Carrow Road.

“We saw Josh on Wednesday the first time in the building after his surgery. Looks good,” he said.

“Obviously, I’ve spoken with him and he does not need any painkillers any longer, which is the good information. Next week, he gets out of stitches, which is then the next step and it still is the timeframe which we set – Christmas, early January – when we hope to have him come back.

“Everything went well so far. But now obviously it’s all about recovery and then to have a proper rehab, and then a proper build up of his fitness.”

Marcelino Nunez is set for a few weeks on the sidelines as the Canaries’ continue to assess the extent of the ankle problem he suffered on international duty for Chile.

But there was more upbeat news on wide players Borja Sainz and Onel Hernandez. Sainz is yet to appear for the club following his summer move, after damaging ankle ligaments early in pre-season, while Hernandez had missed the last four games with a broken hand.

Jacob Sorensen (pelvic surgery) and Grant Hanley (Achilles) are longer term absentees.

“Borja had two days of pre-season, and then he got injured. Now he has had a full week last week with the Under-21s and a full week with us,” said Wagner. “I think it makes sense for sure that he gets a start in the under-21s as well as he works on his fitness. But Onel is back and available, Borja is back in training, we have Adam Forshaw, (Danny) Batth and now (Hwang) Ui-Jo.

“Lunghi (Jacob Sorensen) takes a little bit more time. Hopefully in a week or two he is back in training. Then it is only Nacho and Grant who we will miss.”
