Wilko store in Norwich to close for final time today

The St Stephens Street shop in Norwich will close at 6pm and is the final Wilko branch in Norfolk to close its doors.

The homeware retailer announced it would close shops across the UK in August.

The firm closed its Dereham, Thetford and King’s Lynn branches in September.

Staff at the Wilko in Thetford bid farewell to the location with a Sound of Music performance on TikTok.

A video on TikTok, which has had more than 450,000 views, shows the workers taking their final bows as they say goodbye to the store that had become their “second family”.

Wilko was founded by James Kemsey Wilkinson in Leicester in 1930 and employed 12,500 workers before its collapse.

Poundland owner Pepco agreed last month to buy up to 71 Wilko stores from administrator PwC.

PwC also struck a deal for fellow discount chain B&M to buy 51 other Wilko stores, while The Range agreed a deal to buy Wilko’s brand for around £5 million.
