Norwich’s New Leaf Tattoo Studio opens in Magdalen Street
Poppy Loxam, a tattoo artist based in the city, has gained a reputation as the city’s secret tattooist. In 2013, she opened a studio where clients would only receive the address days before their appointment in order to maintain a safe space. However, as her studio grew in popularity, Poppy decided to move to a new location to improve accessibility for her clients. She wanted a shop that was more accessible to clients with minimal or no stairs so that individuals of all body types could visit. Additionally, a break-in at her former shop in Upper King Street in August made her feel violated, leading her to find a new space.
Now situated in her new shop on Magdalen Street, Poppy sees this as a fresh start for her business. The new location allows her to make her clients feel even more comfortable and be closer to other businesses she values, such as Venus Vinyl, Street Cafe, and Bread Source. Poppy specializes in self-harm scarring cover-up work, which she believes has contributed to her large client base. Many individuals with self-harm scars visit her because they know they will be in a judgment-free environment. Poppy’s goal is to see her clients smile in the mirror after their appointment, knowing that a difficult chapter has come to a close. She is dedicated to supporting and listening to her clients, whether they choose to discuss their struggles or not.
Looking to the future, Poppy hopes to use her studio for art evenings and mental wellbeing events. The current team at the studio is all female, which creates a relaxing environment for clients. Poppy’s tattoo work not only completes a chapter for many people but also adds a unique and empowering touch to her business. She aims to continue providing a safe space for individuals with various needs and offering support and understanding through her tattoos.
