Norwich’s Mall Street Foods gets one-star hygiene rating

Mall Street Foods in Distillery Square, just off Dereham Road, was told “major improvement” is necessary at the shop, which specialises in African and Caribbean food, after inspectors were forced to “destroy” food considered unfit for consumption.

Norwich City Council’s food safety team found bacteria growing on food where its correct storage temperature had not been maintained.

Inspectors said food temperatures were not being monitored at the store and meat in a display freezer had gone soft.

Meat, fish and pre-packed herbs deemed unfit for consumption were disposed of during the inspection last month.

The report found the business had no food safety management system, with packets of meat totally unlabeled.

It added that staff did not have adequate food safety training and were using poor food storage practices.

Trailing electrical cables were deemed to be a “matter of evident concern”.

The city council report said contraventions of food hygiene law had to be rectified as soon as possible or the business would face legal action.

Inspectors did note that the building itself was kept in good condition and equipment used to handle food was kept clean.

Mall Street Foods has been contacted for comment.
