Norwich Playhouse reveal plans for £5m revamp of theatre
Norwich Theatre is set to undergo a £5m makeover to create more space both indoors and outdoors at the Playhouse, with a focus on improving accessibility. The plans were originally set to be unveiled in March 2020 to coincide with the theatre’s 25th anniversary, but the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to those plans. However, the team behind the bustling venue and popular cafe bar have resurrected the plans, with construction tentatively set to begin in late 2024.
The project will include better backstage facilities and more indoor space for patrons to escape inclement weather. Stephen Crocker, chief executive and creative director of Norwich Theatre, hopes that the new plans will make the theatre more accessible. The project is also exploring innovative ways of powering and heating the building, as well as improving the visitor experience with step-free access to all areas including the bar, garden, activities, and shows.
The theatre is currently looking towards charitable trusts for donations and running fundraising efforts to support the project. Crocker stated that the Playhouse is much-loved, but needs some tender loving care, and that it is a special place that is challenged by its building, as it was never built as a theatre. Despite this, the theatre is well known for housing the best touring fringe productions in the country and has become a popular city venue, especially for its cafe bar.
Ultimately, Norwich Theatre is looking to ensure that the Playhouse can thrive with these new improvements, and is likely to have a public appeal for support. The theatre hopes to share more details about the plans, including designs and funding plans, in May of next year.
