Norfolk B&Bs see October bookings soar due to weather
Local holidaymakers in Norfolk have helped boost the profits of bed and breakfast establishments and campsites in the area. Katharine Wolstenholme, owner of College Farm B&B near Thetford, reported a significant increase in annual takings from £30,000 in 2022 to over £51,000 this year. She attributed the rise to a combination of people’s reluctance to travel abroad and the influx of local holidaymakers. Wolstenholme noted that many people in Norfolk preferred the convenience of staying close to home rather than traveling long distances. Additionally, the hot weather in October extended the season, with last-minute weekend breaks becoming popular.
Mark Dixon, the owner of The Kings Arms B&B and restaurant in Flegborough, also saw a recovery in bookings after a slow start to the summer holidays. The rainy weather in July worked in their favor, as people spent less money during the hot weather last year. Dixon also mentioned that the season seemed to be extended this year, with high bookings throughout September. The increased demand for bookings led to a delay in Dixon’s own holiday.
Whitlingham Campsite near Norwich experienced a similar trend. Owner Linda Robey reported a quiet start to the summer, followed by a busy season with a surge in bookings during September and October. Robey observed that people were being more savvy with their money, taking advantage of discounts and booking more last-minute trips. The good weather also contributed to an elongated season for the campsite.
Overall, the combination of people’s reluctance to travel abroad, favorable weather conditions, and increased awareness of discounts led to a boost in profits for B&Bs and campsites in Norfolk. Local holidaymakers, seeking convenience and cost-effective options, contributed to the rise in bookings. The extended season provided further opportunities for businesses to cater to the demand.
