Heartsease businesses facing drop in footfall and trade
The £4.4 million project to make safety improvements to the roundabout and surrounding roads in Heartsease has caused significant financial strain on local businesses. Several shops in the area have reported losing up to 50% of their income just three months into the eight-month long project. The road closures have resulted in a significant drop in passing trade, with some businesses experiencing nearly 100% less traffic. Many shop owners are concerned about their ability to survive the duration of the roadworks.
Sue Burgess, assistant manager at Dreams bridalwear store, expressed her frustration with the poor road signage, which has caused difficulties for customers in finding their store. The lack of passing trade has been particularly challenging for businesses during the busy Black Friday sales period. Despite the hardships faced by local shops, Norfolk County Council, responsible for the roadworks, has stated that they have no legal obligation to compensate the businesses for their loss in trade. This has prompted calls for compensation to support the struggling businesses.
Alison Birmingham, a county councillor for Crome ward, acknowledged the impact the roadworks have had on local businesses and expressed concern about the potential closure of these establishments. However, Councillor Graham Plant of Norfolk County Council has assured that they will continue to do everything possible to indicate that businesses are open as usual. Despite the challenges, some businesses, such as family-run Great Eastern Model Railways, have reported an increase in business since the first lockdown and are encouraging customers to continue supporting local shops.
The roadworks are expected to continue until April, with a temporary pause for the Christmas period from December 23 to January 4. For shops in the area, the lack of foot traffic and passing trade amid the road closures have resulted in significant financial strain. Despite the frustrations and difficulties faced by businesses, some are hopeful for continued support from the local community. Ultimately, the completion of the safety improvements project is eagerly anticipated, with hopes that it will bring relief to the struggling businesses in Heartsease.
