North Walsham churchyard sculptures unveiled

Local artist Berni Marfleet has created two ploughshare sculptures in the grounds of St Nicholas Church in North Walsham. The sculptures depict the history of the town, with one representing the early history before the Industrial Revolution, and the other representing the last 200 years. The sculptures feature tools and machinery parts that have been welded onto the ploughshares to reflect events and activities in the town throughout the ages. A descriptive interpretation board accompanies the sculptures, providing information about the significance of the objects and featuring a QR code to link to local websites for more detailed information. The aim of the project is to educate residents, visitors, and future generations about the history and heritage of North Walsham, particularly with the town’s planned expansion over the next 15 years. The launch of the sculptures was hosted by the vicar, David Warner, and attended by local officials and residents. The project is sponsored by the town council and funded by a grant from the Community Shop, with support from the church and other community organizations. The sculptures were commissioned as part of the Market Towns Initiative funded works to the area to highlight the community’s connection to the town’s ancient heritage.
