Art loving bishop receives degree in Norwich
The Bishop of Norwich the Right Rev Graham James received an honorary degree from Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) on June 8.
The Bishop was presented with his honorary doctorate at St Andrew’s Hall in Norwich alongside over 500 graduating students.
Bishop Graham remarked that in an early school report, his art teacher commented that he ‘takes no interest in this subject’, something he would contradict today as he is an advocate for the virtues of the arts. He said that art is for all of us, not just those who are accomplished artists.
The Bishop, who has his own collection of art, delights in the fact that art has a creative and living presence in the city. He has supported Norwich Cathedral as a venue for the arts, and written contributions for various art catalogues about religious art. He makes a personal commitment to NUA and its students and offers support to the university through the Bishop’s Art Prize.
This annual competition invites students in their final year of study to submit work that explores Christian themes. Entries are exhibited in the Hostry at Norwich Cathedral and the first prize is £1,000 for the winning artist.
