A man who walked from Land’s End to John o’Groats last year on a budget of just £35 while raising almost £30,000 for three Christian charities will be speaking in King’s Lynn in late June.
Many people have walked from John o’Groats to Land’s End, but very few have done it on a shoestring. Kevin McCann walked for 80 days and the total cost of his food and accommodation was £35.
He walked and lived on the good-will of people along the way. He was hosted in private homes, hotels (even £250 per night hotels for free!), and guest houses. He figures he lived better on his walk than he did at home, for every night he was a guest and people provided the best for him.
Kevin started walking on June 3 2014 and finished on August 19. He took about 8 ‘rest’ days over this period and averaged 18 or 19 miles a day on all other days. The route he chose was approximately 1200 miles, taking in the Great Glen Way, the West Highland Way, the Lancaster canal, Offa’s Dyke and the South West coastal path of Devon and Cornwall.
He says “It was a great experience – I had young children sharing their lunch with me, and on a number of occasions told I must be ‘superman’ in disguise. I even had one proposal of marriage!”
His wife Ruth accompanied him for two weeks and helped to organise the walk, which he undertook in order to support the work of three charities. He raised £6000 for water wells in Africa through Tearfund, £17,000 for water wells in India through Nazarene Mission International, and £6000 for New Hope, a charity that helps people with addictions, operated by his home church (Ashton-under-Lyne Church of the Nazarene).
Kevin will be speaking about his walk and illustrating it with 95 photos at the Reffley Community Hall, Reffley Lane, Kings Lynn PE30 3EQ, at 7.30pm on Saturday June 27. Admission is free and people will have an opportunity to make donations to the help with water wells in Sri Lanka through Nazarene Mission International.
This event is being organised by the Reffley Community Church of the Nazarene. He will also be speaking at their morning service at Reffley Community School, at 10.30am on Sunday June 28.
Kevin has written a book about this adventure, “End to End on a Shoestring.” Any profits from this book will also go to charity.
