Norwich care home residents build birdhouses
Residents at Corton House, a not-for-profit care home with a Christian ethos in Norwich, built and painted small birdhouses to be sold at their Summer Fete.
Proceeds from the event will be split between the Amenities Funds at Corton House and its sister Independent Living Scheme, Brakendon Close; as well as being put towards a new initiative, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice…” with which the home hopes to grant some wishes, big or small, for its residents.
The project has been inspired by 92-year-old resident, Brian Staff, whose love of DIY has been nurtured by the home’s Activities and Wellbeing Team. Maria Widdrington, Activities Coordinator, explains, “Brian told us he has always been keen on DIY – even building his own house with swimming pool when he lived in Australia. We always support residents to continue with lifelong hobbies where possible, as we believe that moving into a care home shouldn’t mean giving up the things that make you who you are.”
Brian recently worked with a volunteer to build and paint a wooden planter, which now sits filled with bright flowers on the patio for all the residents to enjoy. He then decided to build birdhouses for his family and the garden at Corton House, and his fellow residents were inspired to help him create more to be sold at the fete.
The Corton House summer fete in August was a great success and featured games, entertainment, and a grand prize raffle. There was a visit from alpacas, Pets as Therapy and information about adult learning opportunities.
