North Norfolk charity helps Malawi cyclone victims

Holt-based charity Aid Africa is already helping those suffering the effects of Cyclone Ana, which has devastated the southern region of Malawi.

High winds and rain have ripped off roofs, destroyed houses, and collapsed outside toilets—causing concerns over sanitation and risk of disease. Household goods—including precious food reserves —and personal belongings, have also been lost. As at the beginning of February, 11 people have died, some are still missing, and 217,000 people have been impacted, many local to the Aid Africa centre.

Lynda Mills from Aid Africa provides a glimpse of magnitude of the challenges in the lives of just three of those impacted – giving an idea of the enormous sudden need in the area:

Esnala, pictured above, from Lolo Village. She’s 84 years old, and lived with a household of 7 in her house. The storms stripped her roof and broke down her walls—she’s lost her limited food reserves and all her household equipment was crushed. She has no income, nor hope that her home could be restored.

Cathren, 42 years old, pictured right, struggles with disabilities, while caring for her 4 children. When her house completely collapsed in the cyclone, everything was destroyed, and she has no resources to rebuild or replace her goods.

“As one of the poorest countries in the world, this level of damage to lives and property is tragic—leaving many in despair for their family’s future” explained Lynda. “Aid Africa is a small charity, founded and managed in North Norfolk, but we have the infrastructure already in place to get help to the most vulnerable within days. We’ve already provided plastic sheeting, but so much more is needed.”
