Aviva and The Forum among Norwich toilet twinned companies

This may seem like an extraordinary move for the Fine City, but there is a serious reason behind it.

The art of toilet twinning involves ‘twinning’ with loos in poor communities in order to provide essential hygiene facilities, giving access to clean water and helping reduce the spread of disease.

As well as having it’s own 10-sided toilet in St Crispins Road, there are now a total of 24 businesses across the city already twinning their toilets, including Aviva and The Forum.

Another venue doing its doodie duty is Bishop’s House.

Rev Graham Usher, the bishop of Norwich, said: “I am delighted that the Fine City of Norwich has been awarded toilet twinning status.

“At Bishop’s House we have been pleased to twin two toilets with the Ivory Coast.

“I know from my experience of working in Africa how important access to safe sanitation is, to women and children in particular, in areas of poverty.”

Toilet twinning is part of the charity Tearfund, with all money donated going directly to its hygiene and sanitisation programme, WASH.

Bridget Archer, a supporter of Tearfund, said: “I first became aware of this when I saw a certificate in a friend’s toilet.

“After doing some research I found out a city or town could earn the status of ‘Toilet Twinned City’ if more than 20 toilets were twinned.

“So for the past 18 months I’ve been sending letters and raising awareness.

“Due to the generosity of certain companies and organisations 24 toilets have now been twinned, with another two in the pipeline.”
