Songs from the heart at Great Yarmouth church

Great Yarmouth Salvation Army has launched a new monthly Dementia-friendly singing group called Singing by Heart, and all are welcome.

Singing By Heart uses a mixture of popular songs like Moon River and hymns such as Amazing Grace, which span the decades. Each song has been carefully selected to ensure they’re fondly recognised by the people in the groups.

It is widely acknowledged that music can trigger past memories and feelings in those living with dementia. The sessions are designed to encourage communication, recollection of memories, and happy thoughts for those taking part. It is also hoped carers will find the sessions beneficial through enabling time for them to relax, make friends, and share experiences.

Singing By Heart h has been adopted at over 80 centres in the UK and Ireland since its launch by the Salvation Army in 2017, and has now come to the Great Yarmouth centre.

Harry Woods, Community Manager at Great Yarmouth Salvation Army, pictured above, said “This is an opportunity to come along with fellow members of the community to sing songs we all know and enjoy, and share some time to build friendships whilst helping and encouraging people to live well. We are excited to offer this to the town, and really look forward to having this time together to come and smile, laugh, and sing and enjoy making new friends.”

Singing By Heart takes place at Great Yarmouth Salvation Army, Tolhouse Street, Great Yarmouth, NR30 2SQ, at 11am on the last Friday of every month and is expected to quickly become a flourishing group. There will be singing for an hour, followed by a light lunch. The group will meet once a month and is open to all who wish to attend. There is no charge.
