Rev Julie Boyd from St Faith’s Church, Gaywood is joining her husband and daughter on a sponsored motorcycle journey from West Norfolk to Inverness in memory of their son, Andrew, to raise money for the church’s new community support centre and West Norfolk Mind.
St Faith’s Church, Gaywood are launching a new modern, community support centre and meeting place on Gayton Road, King’s Lynn. The church have granted West Norfolk Mind free use of the space for their weekly meetings for the first three years to help them further develop the services they offer.
For Rev Julie Boyd, Rector of St Faith’s and her husband, Matthew, the charity holds a special place in their hearts as sadly, their son Andrew took his own life late last year.
Rev Julie said: “My husband and I are really pleased that this new space provided by the church will be able to help so many vital community projects including West Norfolk Mind. My family and I are planning a sponsored event in memory of our son Andrew.
“Andrew was a keen motorcyclist and often suggested that his sister and I should both learn to ride and join him and his Dad on the road. At his funeral last year we made a promise that we would do exactly that and now the time has come to fulfil that promise. Andrew left behind three motorbikes and so his sister and I will be learning to ride and then all three of us will be riding up to Scotland to raise money for this project.”
So the Rev is revving up for the first time ever, having never ridden a motorbike before in her life. The journey begins on Monday, August 13.
The new community facility is temporarily called “Gaywood’s Action Promise” or GAP and the church are asking people in the community to help find the right name for the new centre as the project nears its completion.
Rev Julie said: “Here at St Faith’s church, we’ve spent a lot of time looking for the gap and we feel that there is a need for a meeting place, for action groups and support networks as well as for church groups. We want to fill that gap and support the community to the best of our ability. This new centre at the heart of the community will be where you will find the new church office, a drop-in-centre and café with a friendly welcome and a place that serves you.
“Local support groups and networks will be able to support the people in their care by using this new welcoming café space with private consultation rooms and welcoming gardens in the privacy of the grounds of the church.”
Local organisations and interested parties are invited to attend an information evening to find out more about this new community resource and how to get involved on Monday, June 25 at 7pm at St Faith’s Church, Gaywood.
