One of the founders of the Cambridge Churches Homeless Project, Lucy McKitterick, has been appointed as the new full-time Coordinator of King’s Lynn Winter Night Shelter as it plans to move to a new venue, with increased funding and longer opening hours.
The Trustees of the King’s Lynn Winter Night Shelter have appointed Lucy McKitterick (pictured) as the new Coordinator to lead the project as it plans to open seven nights a week from November through to March.
Lucy McKitterick is moving to King’s Lynn from Ely, but has lived in Cambridge most of her life. It was here she set up the Cambridge Churches Homeless Project with friends from different churches in 2013.
The King’s Lynn Winter Night Shelter launched as a pilot project in December 2017 as a partnership between Churches Together in King’s Lynn, the Purfleet Trust and Imagine Norfolk Together, in response to the rising levels of homelessness in the borough.
This year the shelter will open 7 nights a week from November through to March and will be based on St Ann’s Fort. The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk have committed £25,000 to the project and are seeking match funding for the night shelter. The Mayor has also made the night shelter one of his charities for the year.
Lucy said: “Perhaps the most important thing we can bring to this work is our hope: hope that people’s lives will get easier, even when they may have lost hope themselves; hope that they will come to know their value, because we value them, and we show it; hope that as Churches Together we can make a difference, because Jesus knows what it’s like to be cold, hungry and afraid.
“My hope is that the King’s Lynn Winter Night Shelter will do great things this winter and be a warm welcome place to all who need it.”
