People who lost their lives in the devastating floods of 1953 have been remembered at a service at Great Yarmouth to commemorate the seventieth anniversary.
The service of remembrance was held in Great Yarmouth Minster on Sunday 29 January to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the borough and beyond. In Great Yarmouth and Gorleston 10 people died in the floods, which claimed 307 lives overall across the East of England, and over 80 in Norfolk alone.
Graham Plant, mayor of Great Yarmouth, said: “We were so pleased with the fantastic turn out for the 70th anniversary of the 1953 floods on Sunday. We must continue to teach the younger generations about the history of our borough and recognise and acknowledge those that sadly lost their lives and those that were affected from such a devastating time.”
The Minster has been hosting an exhibition about the floods and those affected by the disaster.
