Acle churches unite for Easter celebration
Members of Acle churches joined together early on Easter Sunday morning for a joint ecumenical service at St Mary’s in nearby Fishley.
A cross – section of members of the Roman Catholic, Methodist and Church of England communities, led by Rev Peter Glanville, Rev Andrew King and Rev Martin Greenland respectively, pictured above, assembled at 5.45am outside the 12th century church in Fishley, a short walk from the market town of Acle.
The congregations were celebrating their traditional annual Easter service which commenced with prayers and hymns inside the church, after which they processed outside, where further hymns were sung, and prayers recited.
Finally, all present stood in a circle as bread and wine were distributed by the officiating clergy. The service closed with a rousing rendition of the hymn, “Jesus Christ is risen today” after which refreshments were served at the nearby Methodist Church.
St Mary’s is a round – towered medieval church on an isolated tree-covered mound among the fields just to the north of Acle. It does not have any electricity and is lit by candles. The nearest road is a fair distance away, but church is reached by a track, with the village of Upton about half a mile away across the fields.
