Operation Christmas Child Brings Holiday Hope to Heartwood School

In a heartwarming collaboration that perfectly embodies the spirit of giving, Heartwood School recently welcomed Mark and Debra Watkins from Operation Christmas Child (OCC) to lead a special collective worship about this year’s Shoebox Appeal. The visit, arranged through a connection with Fountain of Life Church in Ashill/Swaffham, was coordinated by Rebecca Watts, Lead Teacher for Collective Worship, who saw in this ministry an opportunity to reinforce the school’s core values of compassion and understanding of need. As Heartwood embarks on its first year partnering with Operation Christmas Child, the school community has been delighted to discover the wealth of resources and support available to make the project both meaningful and enjoyable for students. “We wanted to give our children a real opportunity to understand compassion in action,” explained Rebecca. “The Shoebox Appeal provides a meaningful way for them to see how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.” This initiative aligns perfectly with Heartwood’s vision of nurturing responsible minds to make a difference both locally and globally.

During their visit, the Watkins couple created a powerful learning experience for the children, helping them understand the reality faced by less fortunate children around the world. Through engaging stories and videos, they illustrated what it means to go without basic necessities that many take for granted—items as simple as a toothbrush or having to share a single pencil with others. The presentation brought to life the journey of a shoebox gift from the hands of the giver to the child who receives it, emphasizing how these seemingly small acts of generosity can create lasting positive impacts. The children were particularly moved by seeing the joy on recipients’ faces when opening their gifts, creating a tangible connection between their actions and the happiness they could bring to others across the globe. This approach made abstract concepts like compassion and global citizenship concrete and accessible for young minds.

The warmth and enthusiasm of the Heartwood student body left a profound impression on Mark and Debra Watkins. “We came away amazed by how well-behaved, friendly, and motivated the children were,” Mark shared following their visit. He was particularly struck by the confidence displayed by students who led portions of the collective worship and helped make the visitors feel welcome. This student leadership exemplified the school’s commitment to developing children who not only understand values like compassion intellectually but can actively demonstrate them in real-world settings. The visitors noted how seamlessly the Operation Christmas Child initiative complemented Heartwood’s educational philosophy, observing that “the OCC charity fits beautifully with this vision” of developing globally-minded young people who recognize their capacity to make a difference.

The collective worship session went beyond simply explaining the mechanics of the shoebox program—it aimed to inspire and empower the children. Mark and Debra emphasized that regardless of age, everyone possesses valuable skills, gifts, and compassion that can be channeled to improve the lives of others. This message resonated strongly with Heartwood’s educational approach, which seeks to develop children’s understanding that they can be agents of positive change in their communities and beyond. By connecting the shoebox project to the school’s core values, the presentation helped students see how abstract concepts like compassion can translate into concrete actions. The children were encouraged to think about what items might bring joy to a child their age who has very little, fostering empathy and thoughtfulness in the gift selection process.

Debra Watkins’ parting words captured the essence of their experience at Heartwood: “Wow—what a great school with such a heart to prepare children to become valued adults who are able to support others.” This observation highlights the deeper purpose behind initiatives like the Shoebox Appeal—they’re not just about providing material gifts but about shaping the character and worldview of the givers. For Heartwood School, participating in Operation Christmas Child represents an educational opportunity that extends far beyond traditional classroom learning. Through this project, students gain practical experience in generosity, develop cross-cultural awareness, and learn to recognize their own privilege while developing a sense of responsibility toward others—all essential components of becoming thoughtful global citizens in an interconnected world.

The partnership between Heartwood School and Operation Christmas Child exemplifies how educational institutions can integrate character development with academic learning to prepare students for meaningful participation in society. Rebecca Starman, Head of School, and the staff at Heartwood have created an environment where values-based education thrives, where children understand that education is not solely about personal achievement but also about using knowledge and resources to benefit others. For those inspired by this initiative, Mark and Debra Watkins welcome inquiries from churches, schools, groups, or businesses interested in participating in Operation Christmas Child. They can be contacted at [email protected], while additional information is available at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk. As the holiday season approaches, the Heartwood community looks forward to continuing this journey of compassion, one shoebox at a time, teaching their students that even small hands can make a big difference in our world.
