Youngsters set to embark on cycling challenge to raise money for Norfolk bereavement charity Nelson’s Journey
The sun will soon rise over the beautiful Norfolk countryside, signaling the start of the highly anticipated Tour de Broads cycling event. For the fourth consecutive year, this fantastic fundraiser will be supporting Nelson’s Journey, a local bereavement charity that provides invaluable assistance to children and young people dealing with the loss of a loved one. As the only specialist child bereavement support service in Norfolk, Nelson’s Journey has been a beacon of hope for countless families since its inception in 1997. With a significant increase in referrals in recent years, totaling 713 last year alone, the charity’s work is more crucial than ever. The Tour de Broads event offers a wonderful opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities to come together, get active, and make a real difference in the lives of those affected by bereavement.
This year, many young cyclists have taken on the challenge, including 12-year-old Frank Spauls from Cringleford near Norwich. Frank’s story is a testament to the human spirit, as he prepares to tackle the 100-mile route in memory of his mother, who he lost at a young age. Despite the daunting distance, Frank is determined to push through, driven by his passion for cycling and his desire to support other bereaved children like himself. With an impressive £1900 already raised, Frank’s journey is an inspiration to us all, demonstrating the power of courage, resilience, and compassion. As Frank so poignantly expressed, “I am doing this ride to remember my mum and to help other children who have lost someone they love.” His words serve as a poignant reminder of the impact that Nelson’s Journey has on the lives of those it touches.
The Tour de Broads event offers a range of routes to suit all riders, from the seasoned cyclist to the novice enthusiast. With distances of 100, 75, 50, 25, and five miles, there is something for everyone. For Elizabeth Nelson and her six-year-old daughter Poppy from Horsford, near Norwich, the five-mile family ride is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together and raise money for a wonderful cause. Poppy’s excitement is palpable as she prepares to take on the “Tour De Broadies,” as she affectionately calls it, just a day before her seventh birthday. Her enthusiasm is a joy to behold, and her love for cycling is a testament to the enduring power of childhood innocence and curiosity.
As the event approaches, more and more young people are being inspired to take part, each with their own unique story and motivation. Nine-year-old Harry Tarling from Costessey is riding the 25-mile route in memory of his aunt, Laura, who passed away when his dad was just a young boy. Accompanied by his grandfather, Harry is riding to honor his dad’s memory and to support others who have experienced a similar loss. His selflessness and empathy are a shining example of the kindness and compassion that defines us as human beings. As Harry so eloquently stated, “I’m riding for my dad, for people like him, and in memory of Laura too.” His words serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of love and loss on our lives.
