Royal visit celebrates Norwich Cathedral organ

The Duke of Edinburgh visited Norwich Cathedral to see the newly rebuilt historic pipe organ, which was funded by the They Shall Laugh and Sing Music Appeal. As the Patron of the appeal, HRH was able to witness firsthand the results of the campaign and enjoy the music of the organ before the start of the Organ Reborn! 2024 Festival. During his visit, The Duke also met with choristers and attended Evensong to hear the Cathedral Choir and the newly rebuilt organ in action.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been a long-term supporter of the musical life at Norwich Cathedral, previously visiting in 2019 and currently serving as the Patron of The Statham Society. The Society was established to further musical opportunities at the Cathedral, with HRH even participating in a Zoom call with the Cathedral’s choristers to help choose the Society’s name in honor of Heathcote Statham, a former organist. The Dean of Norwich expressed gratitude for The Duke’s continued support and interest in the Cathedral’s music.

The historic pipe organ at Norwich Cathedral is a key part of its musical life, boasting an impressive 5,767 pipes of varying lengths. The recent rebuild project by organ specialists Harrison and Harrison was completed in 2023 after over a decade of work, marking the first complete overhaul of the instrument since it was rebuilt in 1942 following a fire. The Organ Reborn! 2024 Festival will celebrate the first anniversary of the organ’s return, featuring a range of events such as concerts with Cathedral Choirs, the BBC Singers, and Britten Sinfonia.

The festival, taking place from July 6 to 14, 2024, aims to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the music of the organ. With a variety of performances scheduled, including a Battle of the Organs, the nine-day event promises to be a treat for music fans. The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to the Cathedral and his ongoing support for its musical endeavors highlight the importance of music in cultural heritage and the role it plays in enriching the lives of those who experience it.
