King gives royal boost to Norwich Cathedral

His Majesty King Charles III has become the patron of the Friends of Norwich Cathedral, taking over the role from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Friends received confirmation of His Majesty’s patronage in a letter from Buckingham Palace, following a review of royal patronages conducted by the Royal Household after the King’s accession. Charles Barratt, Chairman of the Friends, expressed his delight at the honor of Royal Patronage continuing into the charity’s 95th year, especially as they approach their centenary celebrations. The Dean of Norwich, the Very Rev Dr. Andrew Braddock, also expressed his honor and delight at His Majesty The King accepting the patronage, highlighting the historic and close ties between the Royal Family, Norfolk, and the Cathedral.

Established in 1930, the Friends of Norwich Cathedral is an independent charity dedicated to raising funds for the maintenance of the Norwich Anglican Cathedral’s fabric. Over the past nine decades, the organization has supported various projects, including the building of the Hostry and Refectory, restoration work in the Cloister, and the rebuilding of the Cathedral’s organ. With over 1,800 members, the Friends play a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the Cathedral’s fabric for future generations. The charity has a long history of royal support, dating back to its inception, with His Majesty King George V giving his approval in 1930 and later, His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becoming patrons.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Norwich Cathedral three times during her reign, including the official opening of the new Refectory and Hostry in May 2010, as part of the Cathedral’s 900th anniversary celebrations in April 1996, and for the opening of the then visitor center in April 1975. Prior to becoming Queen, Princess Elizabeth visited the Cathedral in 1951 as part of a city tour. The continued royal support demonstrates the significant relationship between the Royal Family, Norfolk, and Norwich Cathedral. The Friends of Norwich Cathedral are honored to have had the support of various monarchs over the years and are grateful for the encouragement and assistance in their efforts to preserve and improve the Cathedral’s historic fabric.

The Friends of Norwich Cathedral continue their mission with the support of His Majesty King Charles III as patron, continuing the tradition of royal patronage that has been a part of the organization since its inception. Supporters and members of the Friends play a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the Cathedral’s fabric for generations to come, ensuring its continued maintenance and upkeep. The historic and close ties between the Royal Family, Norfolk, and Norwich Cathedral are celebrated, with the royal patronage serving as a source of encouragement and motivation for the Friends in their various fundraising and restoration efforts. The continuation of this tradition of support from the British monarchy further strengthens the bond between the Royal Family and the historic Cathedral.
