Norwich church launches music group for fathers
A new music group called Sing Together, Grow Together has been established at St George’s Church in Norwich to promote wellbeing for new fathers. The free sessions are targeted towards fathers of children aged two and under and have been funded by the Norfolk Community Foundation. The group, organized by Matt Hayward, encourages fathers to come together, share their experiences of fatherhood, and bond over music with their children. The project aims to promote singing, which teaches communication and coordination skills, while also supporting brain development. Favorite songs from the sessions will be added to a special songbook for families to continue the musical bonding at home.
Matt Hayward, a 37-year-old father who attends the group with his 16-month-old daughter Isla, spoke about the benefits of the sessions for fathers. He mentioned the opportunity for dads to talk about their experiences, such as sleepless nights and walking with their children, in a supportive and welcoming environment. Hayward emphasized the importance of fathers being more involved in parenting activities, as many sessions are typically mid-week and mom-focused. He also noted that mothers are welcome to attend the sessions, as the group is intended for dads and families to come together and connect over music.
Rev Annie Blyth, the church’s assistant priest, expressed her admiration for the Sing Together, Grow Together group, describing it as “absolutely marvelous” and emphasizing the importance of community and love within the church. She highlighted the joy it brings her to see fathers and families coming together to support each other and build connections through music. Blyth encouraged more families to participate in the sessions, which can be booked online for upcoming dates. The group aims to create a positive and inclusive space for fathers and families to bond over music and foster wellbeing for both parents and children.
