Cathedral parishioner is new Norwich Lord Mayor 

Vivien Thomas, a parishioner of St John’s Catholic Cathedral and shop supervisor, has been elected as the Lord Mayor of Norwich for the civic year 2024-25. Alongside the new Sheriff of Norwich, Sirajul Islam, she was sworn in at a formal ceremony at City Hall on May 21. Thomas, who was first elected in 2010, stated that she got involved in politics to make a difference in the lives of the city’s residents. She has been a volunteer at St John’s Cathedral for many years and recently took on the role of Shop Supervisor. Thomas emphasized the importance of addressing social inequalities, including issues such as housing, poverty, and social isolation, during the ceremony.

Thomas, who has been living in Norwich for 17 years with her husband Vaughan, also a Labour councillor, expressed her privilege at serving as a councillor and her honor at representing the residents as the Lord Mayor. She has experience working with schools and young people in the city, giving her insight into the challenges faced in this area. Along with Sirajul, they have selected The Benjamin Foundation as the civic charity for the year. This charity focuses on supporting children, young people, and families, and assists over 3,000 individuals across Norfolk and Suffolk. Thomas and Sirajul aim to raise awareness and support for those facing difficulties in the community, highlighting the importance of closing the gap for individuals facing inequalities.

The ceremony at City Hall was attended by the Dean of the Cathedral, the Cathedral Manager, and a shop volunteer, alongside various other members of the community. Thomas and Sirajul are dedicated to making a positive impact during their term and are focused on addressing the pressing issues faced by residents in Norwich. Thomas’s commitment to improving the lives of people in the city is evident in her previous work and her current role as Lord Mayor.
