Church heads out into the Horning sun
St Benedict’s Church in Horning recently held their first-ever Church in the Sun event, which aimed to welcome new families and provide a fun and engaging experience for young people. The event attracted 20 children and their families, who gathered to explore the significance of the sun in our lives. The Rector, Revd Ben Bradshaw, began the service by discussing Genesis 1 and how we can give thanks for God creating the sun. The children participated by sharing why the sun is important and listing all the ways we need it. Father Ben then connected the concept of the sun to Jesus being the light of the world and how Christ can shine in our lives.
After the service, everyone headed outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and partake in various activities and games. A BBQ and ice cream were also provided for all to enjoy. When the sun became too intense, the group moved inside the church to complete a treasure hunt, which helped them discover the different items found in the church and their significance. Revd Bradshaw expressed his satisfaction with the event, mentioning that many families were visiting St Benedict’s for the first time. This gathering was part of the benefice’s Children’s Church programme, which aims to offer enjoyable and educational services for young people and their families, with past events including a teddy bear’s picnic and a Palm Sunday walk with donkeys.
Events like Church in the Sun are crucial for fostering community engagement and introducing new families to the church. By providing a welcoming and interactive experience, St Benedict’s Church was able to connect with families who may not have previously attended. The event also served as an opportunity for participants to reflect on the importance of the sun in our lives and draw parallels to Jesus as the light of the world. Through a combination of spiritual teachings, outdoor activities, and fellowship, St Benedict’s Church was able to create a memorable and meaningful experience for all those in attendance.
The success of the Church in the Sun event demonstrates the positive impact that creative and inclusive initiatives can have on community outreach. By combining traditional religious teachings with fun and engaging activities, St Benedict’s Church was able to attract new families and create a welcoming environment for all. As the benefice continues its mission and outreach efforts, events like these will play a crucial role in building connections and fostering a sense of belonging among community members. Overall, the Church in the Sun event was a testament to the importance of creativity, inclusivity, and community engagement in the realm of church outreach and programming.
