Norwich homeless drop in centre marks 25 years
The Salvation Army run ‘Arc’ in Norwich is celebrating its 25th anniversary this week. The Arc is a drop-in service for people sleeping rough, offering hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, and a warm, non-judgmental welcome. The service was first conceived by Salvation Army officer Barry Willson in 1999, in response to the growing need for holistic support for rough sleepers in the area. Initially started by serving sandwiches and tea, the Arc has since grown into a vital support system for those in need.
Funded by the Salvation Army centrally, the Arc maintains a strong link with the local Salvation Army on St Giles, where volunteers prepare homemade sandwiches a couple of times a week. Service manager Nikki Darkins and her committed team offer individuals a genuine, warm welcome without any judgment. Over the years, the needs of their clients have evolved, often due to poor mental health. The Arc has become a consistent and familiar presence for those who come seeking support, with many clients returning for years.
Despite facing increasing challenges, such as language barriers and a rise in the number of refugees seeking assistance, the Arc remains a welcoming space for all. Various services, including healthcare, employment support, and advice, are based out of the Arc, providing clients with the resources they need to improve their situation. The service has also cultivated a strong relationship with local churches and charity shops, who provide financial donations and donations of clothing. As the Arc celebrates its anniversary, all are invited to join in commemorating a service that offers kindness, chances, and genuine friendship to those in need.
A special service marking the 25th anniversary of the Arc will be held on Sunday, September 15th at the Citadel on St Giles Street. The service will include music, client stories, staff interviews, prayers of thanks, and cake. Donations to support the work of the Arc can be made online. The dedicated team at the Arc, led by Nikki and supported by a network of volunteers and professionals, continue to provide vital support and assistance to rough sleepers in Norwich, demonstrating the power of community and compassion in helping those in need.
