Ex-Norwich footballer Grant Holt takes on ‘epic’ 100-mile walk

Grant Holt, a former professional footballer, is embarking on a 100-mile walk to raise funds for the Big C Cancer Charity. Teaming up with a local recruitment firm and others, Holt’s journey will start in Cromer and finish in Norwich. The walk, set to begin on Monday and end on Tuesday, will be a significant challenge testing both mind and body according to Holt. He will be joined by local businessmen Richard Pearce and Sean Garrihy, as well as brothers Adam and Darren Miller from Norwich-based recruitment company ARC.

The group plans to set off from No1 Cromer fish and chip shop at around 5:00 BST and make their way to Norwich via King’s Lynn, forming a large C-shaped route on the map. The goal is to walk continuously throughout the day and night, aiming to arrive at Big C’s support center at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by Tuesday. Holt described the walk as a significant challenge, estimating it may take around 38 hours with no sleep and only a few short stops along the way.

Training for the walk has been ongoing, with the group taking regular Saturday walks joined by others for mental health benefits and fitness. Brothers Adam and Darren Miller, whose recruitment firm supports Big C, have a personal connection to the cause. Last year, the charity provided significant support to them when they lost their father, even facilitating their sister’s wedding in the hospital. This support inspired them to give back through the upcoming walk with Holt.

Big C, one of East Anglia’s largest cancer charities, has raised £40 million since its founding 40 years ago. The charity’s events and engagement manager, Tom Holmes, praised the walk as an incredible fundraising event. The journey, which will cover significant distances and require stamina and determination, is aimed at raising vital funds for the charity’s continued work in supporting those affected by cancer. Holt and his companions are prepared for the physical and mental challenges ahead as they embark on this inspiring fundraising walk for a cause close to their hearts.
