Successful start for Dereham church’s Food Cabin

The Food Cabin in Dereham, a project by the Wellspring Family Centre, has had a successful first year of serving the local community and is preparing for its second year. Part of the Nourishing Norfolk Network, the Food Cabin offers affordable food items and toiletries to individuals in the Breckland area on a membership basis. The project aims to support those “Just About Managing” with their finances, provide affordable food to as many people as possible, and offer support through befriending, advice, and connecting to other services. It partners with suppliers to provide products at a reduced cost, with members typically saving 30% on their weekly shop.

The Food Cabin is aimed at individuals who may not necessarily meet the emergency criteria of a food bank and it also offers wider support such as budgeting, priority tariffs, and cost of living support. The project has a real community feel and provides person-centered support, going above and beyond to help members with tasks such as moving home, installing a washing machine, and arranging transport for hospital visits. With over 100 members, the Food Cabin has plenty of room for more and is located next to the Wellspring Family Centre, near the Mid Norfolk Foodbank’s distribution center in Dereham. People can sign up during opening hours on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm and Fridays from 5pm to 7pm, or by emailing [email protected] or [email protected].

The Food Cabin project manager, Toby Rouse, emphasized the community feel and person-centered support provided by the team. The project has been able to help numerous members with various tasks and has over 100 members with plenty of room for more. The Food Cabin aims to continue its successful support of the local community in its second year and looks forward to serving more members in the coming months.
