Christian charity launches Norwich social supermarket

Norwich Christian youth charity ENYP has launched its first social supermarket in the city’s Russell Street Community Centre with more than 80 households registered to use it within the first two weeks.

In June ENYP opened the doors to its first social supermarket in response to the growing number of households struggling with increased food prices.

It sells highly-discounted food, including fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen chicken, as well as household essentials such as cleaning materials and toiletries and its location means it is easy for people to access, explains ENYP’s Lucie Fox.

“Already hundreds of people are registered and the feedback so far has been extremely positive, with people saying how useful it is to be able to choose their own food items in the amounts they need.”

All are welcome and registration costs only £2. It is open from 4-6pm on Mondays, from 11am to 1pm on Wednesdays and from 9-11am on Fridays.

ENYP has also secured further funding to open another social supermarket in partnership with St Giles Trust which will be based in the Anglia Square area, and will also work with churches across the North Norwich and Sprowston Benefice.

“Whilst this offering will be a slightly different model we’re pleased to be part of the growing network of organisations and charities working together to ensure that no one goes hungry and to be part of Norfolk Community Foundation’s commitment to ‘Nourishing Norfolk’,” said Lucie.

Rev Danny Doran-Smith, Director of ENYP, said: “Social supermarkets meet both the practical need of affordable food provision whilst also providing social support which is so vital in helping to tackle some of the underlying causes of food poverty.”
