Serving God in a warzone: special meeting in Norwich

Norwich Church to Host Ukrainian Missionaries Amid War’s Devastation
In a remarkable display of international solidarity, Norwich Evangelical Free Church (NEFC) will welcome a small delegation of missionaries from Ukraine on March 25. Malcom Clegg from Central Eurasian Partners (CEP) will be accompanied by two colleagues who will share powerful firsthand accounts of their work and faith amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The event will provide a unique opportunity for the Norwich community to hear about both the devastation of war and the resilience of the human spirit, as these missionaries continue their spiritual and humanitarian work in extraordinarily challenging circumstances.
Central Eurasian Partners represents a coalition of Christian mission organizations operating throughout Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Their work extends far beyond traditional evangelism, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of communities facing unprecedented challenges in rapidly evolving societies. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, CEP has been deeply involved in relief efforts, forming meaningful partnerships with schools in Lutsk, collaborating with the Realis Christian center in Kyiv, and providing crucial support to chaplains and Christian ministers working alongside soldiers on the front lines of the conflict. Their comprehensive approach to aid demonstrates how faith-based organizations can respond holistically to humanitarian crises.
The upcoming presentation marks the third time NEFC has hosted representatives from CEP, with previous visits focusing on humanitarian missions to war-affected regions. Luther Chaplin, an elder from NEFC, expressed profound respect for these missionaries, noting: “It is always very humbling to meet and hear from those who, in the words of Romans 16:4, ‘risk their own necks’ to serve others for Christ’s sake.” Chaplin’s reference to biblical scripture underscores the church’s recognition of the extraordinary courage demonstrated by these individuals who continue their ministry despite considerable personal risk. Their unwavering commitment offers a powerful testimony to faith in action during times of extreme adversity.
What makes this event particularly significant is the rare perspective it offers on a conflict that has dominated headlines but is often understood only through distant media coverage. The missionaries will provide insights into how communities maintain hope and practice their faith even as war transforms their daily reality. Their presence in Norwich creates a direct human connection between the local community and those experiencing the war firsthand, potentially fostering deeper empathy and understanding. As Chaplin observed, “Whatever the circumstances, in war or at peace, the message of salvation and the love of Christ remain the same and it is inspiring to meet people who hold true to it in a very difficult setting, and who are seeing God build his kingdom.”
For many attendees, this event will transcend religious boundaries, offering universal lessons about human resilience, compassion, and service during crisis. The missionaries’ stories will likely highlight how communities come together across differences when facing existential threats, demonstrating humanity’s capacity for solidarity in the most challenging circumstances. Their experiences on the frontlines of both humanitarian aid and spiritual support provide a unique lens through which to understand not only the specific situation in Ukraine but also broader questions about how individuals and communities respond to trauma, maintain hope, and rebuild lives shattered by conflict.
The gathering will take place on Wednesday, March 25, from 7:30 to 8:45 pm at the former Railway Mission building, located at 79 Prince of Wales Road (NR1 1DG) in Norwich. Community members interested in attending or seeking additional information are encouraged to contact NEFC elder Luther Chaplin directly at 07920 178524. This event represents more than just a church meeting; it offers a meaningful opportunity for cultural exchange, education about an ongoing international crisis, and inspiration from those who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to serving others amid unimaginable challenges. Through stories shared by these Ukrainian missionaries, attendees will gain insights into both the devastating realities of war and the persistent power of faith, compassion, and human connection that continues to shine even in the darkest circumstances.
